Philosophy of Innovation in Teaching and Learning

Innovation in education can be impacted by the teacher and learner in many different environments. Innovation in education can be identified as the development and implementation of creativity that adds value and improves processes. That creativity should be teacher driven in order to inspire students to develop unique ideas or improve on existing ones. Innovative teaching can be formal or informal influence to facilitate a learning experience for students. The learner’s perception of innovative approaches can vary depending on the candidate resulting in a diverse environment which teachers must adapt and overcome in order to reach all learners.

Teachers require a grasp of their role in the bigger picture of education; understanding their purpose in the classroom, province, country, and globally. In doing so teachers will develop an appreciation for the historical context that has influenced where they are today, as well as the philosophical inquiries that have contributed to the direction and evolution of education and where they will take us in the future. When a teacher can critically and objectively examine this relationship and its importance, they are ready to communicate the same values to their students.

As an innovative educator it is important to develop a professional culture of innovative education that collaborates for methodology and understanding of how students learn. This requires leadership within the institution to buy into the potential curriculum growth benefits from innovative teaching and learning. Innovative education should not solely focus on technological advancements in the classroom, but rather the range of delivery methods to impart knowledge and understanding to reach each individual learner.
