Direct instruction involves explicitly explaining different strategies to students, as well as how those strategies are used and what skills are involved in using those strategies (Zimmerman, 2008).

The focus of this kind of instruction is modeling and demonstration. When teachers model and explain their own thought processes necessary for completing activities and assignments, students are more apt to understand and begin to use those same processes on their own (Boekaerts & Corno, 2005).

Research has shown that this type of instruction can be the best initial strategy for encouraging students to be more self-regulative (Levy, 1996).
