In the past I have used a technique called 'gradual release of responsibility' in a sixth grade classroom. I found this technique extremely effective for getting students comfortable with working on tasks, even more difficult tasks, independently. Some problems with this technique are that the more advanced students are often ready to jump ahead of the process, but I was able to keep them interested by having them help others.

This instructional model requires that the teacher, by design, transitions from assuming "all the responsibility for performing a task...to a situation in which the students assume all of the responsibility." (Duke & Pearson, 2002, p. 211)
